Why pick one
- Full bed access with nothing folded against the back window.
- Locks at any position on most models, so you can haul a tall load with the rest of the bed covered.
- Tough — aluminum slat covers handle weather and weight well.
- Works with bed racks — the cover slides under many rack systems.
Trade-offs
- The canister takes space — usually 8–12 inches of bed length and some depth at the front.
- Drain tubes are needed to route water out of the canister.
- Most expensive of the common cover types, and the heaviest to remove.
Fitment tips
Retractables need the bed's inside length and the rail shape, and they're made per generation. Moving one to a different truck is only practical when the beds share a box — check with the compare tool.
